The honest guide to portable power stations

Watt-hours store the energy. Watts move it. Understand both before you spend a dollar.

A portable power station is nothing more than a lithium battery, an inverter, and a charge controller wrapped in a case with a handle. The spec sheet, though, is where buyers get burned. This guide breaks down the numbers that matter so you can size a unit to your actual load instead of the retailer's headline figure.

Watt-hours versus watts: the two numbers people confuse

Capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh). A 1000Wh station can theoretically deliver 1000 watts for one hour, 100 watts for ten hours, or 50 watts for twenty. Output is measured in watts (W) and describes how much load the inverter can drive at any instant. A huge battery with a weak inverter still cannot start a power tool, and a strong inverter drains a small battery in minutes.

Always separate the two questions. First: how much energy do I need between recharges? That sets your watt-hour target. Second: what is the single largest device I will plug in? That sets your minimum inverter rating. Buyers who only look at capacity end up unable to run a microwave; buyers who only look at output end up recharging constantly.

Surge watts versus continuous watts

Motors and compressors draw a brief spike of current at startup that can be two to three times their running draw. A refrigerator rated at 150 running watts may surge past 700 watts for a fraction of a second. Inverters publish a continuous rating and a higher surge (or peak) rating. Match the surge figure to your motor loads, not the running figure, or the station will trip its overload protection the instant the compressor kicks on.

Battery chemistry: LiFePO4 has quietly won

Older stations used NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) cells, which are energy-dense and light but fade after roughly 500 to 800 full cycles and are more thermally sensitive. The current generation uses LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate, sometimes written LFP). These cells are heavier per watt-hour but routinely deliver 3000 or more cycles to 80 percent capacity, tolerate heat better, and are chemically more stable.

For a device you expect to keep for a decade and cycle regularly, LiFePO4 is the clear pick. If you charge and discharge a unit a few times a year, an NMC unit's cycle disadvantage matters less and the weight savings can be worth it. Read the chemistry on the spec sheet; it is often buried below the flashy capacity number.

Recharge speed and input options

A station is only as useful as your ability to refill it. Look for three input paths: AC wall charging, solar input through an MPPT controller, and 12V vehicle charging. AC recharge times vary enormously, from under two hours on fast-charging models to eight hours on budget units for the same capacity.

Solar input is capped by the built-in charge controller's maximum voltage and wattage, not by how many panels you own. A unit that accepts 200W of solar will ignore the extra if you connect 400W of panels. Check the maximum solar input rating and the accepted voltage window before buying panels to pair with it.

Ports, pure sine wave, and pass-through

Confirm the AC inverter is pure sine wave, not modified sine wave. Sensitive electronics, CPAP machines, and some motor tools misbehave or buzz on modified sine output. Count the AC outlets, USB-C PD ports with their wattage, and any 12V DC outputs against what you actually plan to run simultaneously.

Pass-through charging, where the station powers your devices while itself being charged, is convenient but ages the battery faster if used constantly. Treat it as a bridge, not a permanent operating mode.
